Why Families Turn to a Maurepas Catastrophic Injury Attorney After a Life-Changing Crash

A catastrophic injury changes a household overnight. A severe brain injury, a damaged spinal cord, third-degree burns, or the loss of a limb can mean months in a hospital bed and a long stretch of therapy. It can also force a complete rework of how a family pays its bills and gets through an ordinary day.
When life-changing accidents happen, you need a trusted Maurepas personal injury lawyer as your advocate.
Attorney Andre P. Gauthier has been licensed in Louisiana since 1992 and was named to The National Trial Lawyers’ Top 100 Trial Lawyers list for eight straight years, from 2009 through 2016. That trial background matters when a catastrophic injury claim has to account for years of care, not just the first few months of bills.

Catastrophic Injuries We Help Clients Near Maurepas Recover From
Not every car wreck or job-site accident leaves someone with a catastrophic injury, but when it does, the financial and physical fallout is different in kind, not just degree. We help clients and families work through claims involving:
- Traumatic brain injuries from a crash, fall, or blow to the head
- Spinal cord damage resulting in partial or full paralysis
- Severe burns requiring skin grafts or reconstructive surgery
- Amputation or loss of use of a limb
- Multiple fractures requiring surgical hardware and long-term rehabilitation
- Wrongful death caused by another person’s or company’s negligence
These injuries can mean a lifetime of medical care, assistive equipment, or lost income, and that is the math a catastrophic injury claim has to get right. Our experienced catastrophic injury attorney in Maurepas knows what to look for and how to build a claim based on the medical evidence.
Our Past Results
Numbers from past verdicts cannot predict what any new case is worth, but they do show what a jury can award when the evidence supports it.
Our firm’s results include a $5 million auto accident jury award covered by Lawyers Weekly USA, a $4.4 million jury award covered by Gonzales Weekly, and a $4 million auto accident jury verdict won jointly by Attorneys Andre Gauthier and Lee “Jody” Amedee III.
The Wall Street Journal even covered a $1.5 million personal injury jury award the firm won. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
What Louisiana Law Says About Fault and Your Filing Deadline
Louisiana law lets an injured person recover damages when another person or company’s carelessness caused the harm. For accidents on or after January 1, 2026, Louisiana follows a modified comparative fault rule: an award is reduced by the injured person’s own share of fault, but a person found 51% or more at fault is barred from recovering.
For accidents before that date, the older pure comparative fault rule still applies and reduces an award by a person’s share of fault without that cutoff. Under either rule, the bigger risk for most families is time.
In most injury cases, you have two years from the day you are hurt to file a lawsuit. This rule is in La. Civ. Code art. 3493.1. Some cases have different deadlines. In a wrongful death case, the deadline is one year from the death or two years from the injury, whichever is longer. Medical malpractice claims have their own deadlines, which are often shorter.
If you miss the deadline that applies to your case, the other side can ask the court to throw out your claim. In most cases, the court will agree, no matter how serious the injury or how clear the fault. A few exceptions exist, so talk with a lawyer as soon as you can.
How Our Maurepas Catastrophic Injury Lawyers Build These Cases
Building a strong case takes careful planning from the start. Our legal team begins by looking into the accident, gathering key evidence, and talking with medical experts to understand how serious your injuries are. Attorney Andre P. Gauthier uses his decades of courtroom experience to try to show who was at fault and to build a strong argument for you.
To build a claim that accounts for your future needs, we work with experts who calculate ongoing medical bills, future care, and lost pay. Attorney Lee “Jody” Amedee III uses his deep trial experience to stand up to insurance companies. Together, our team works hard to help injured families get financial support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is my catastrophic injury claim worth in Louisiana?
Value depends on medical costs already paid, the projected cost of future care, lost income and earning capacity, and pain and suffering. It also depends on how much fault a jury gives to each person and on how much insurance or other money is available to pay. For accidents on or after January 1, 2026, a person found 51% or more at fault cannot recover. Special limits apply in some cases, such as claims against a government agency or for medical malpractice.
Which court handles a catastrophic injury case near Maurepas?
A lawsuit over an injury is usually filed in the parish where the injury happened or where the person at fault lives. Maurepas is an unincorporated community in Livingston Parish. A case from an injury there is often filed in the 21st Judicial District Court, with filings and records handled through the Livingston Parish Courthouse. Cases against a government agency or cases that qualify for federal court can follow different rules.
How much does it cost to hire a catastrophic injury lawyer?
We offer a free consultation, and catastrophic injury cases are generally handled so legal fees in catastrophic injury cases generally come from any settlement or award, not out of your pocket up front.
What makes a personal injury ‘catastrophic’ instead of standard?
A catastrophic injury typically involves permanent impairment, such as paralysis, amputation, severe brain damage, or disfigurement, that changes a person’s ability to work or live independently for the rest of their life. That permanence is a major reason future-care costs and claim value can be so high.
